So, the human body is mainly made up of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon and oxygen. These are actually very universal elements making up 75% of our Milky Way but that is not the point, just an interesting point that we are mainly made of the same stuff as everything else.

No, my point is that they are all very small elements. All very low on the periodic table and thus candidates for Fusion reactions, not Fission reactions.

Now when larger elements go through nuclear process, the split apart. This is called Fission. So if you take an element like Uranium and want to get a nuclear reaction, you fire smaller partials at it until it splits apart and releases its binding energy. Now binding energy is important so I want you to remember this concept. There is an energy that is requited to hold the nucleus of Uranium together. When it gets smaller, it gets closer to what we call the valley of stability at atomic number 52.

Now what we are made of are much smaller than 52 proton. We are below this valley of stability. This means we have binding energy which is only released when we fuse with other elements.

Let’s take one of our main elements, Oxygen since it’s one of our favourite consumptions and has the atomic number of lucky number 8! When two Oxygen nuculi meet in a bar, they have to overcome massive repulsion due to their electrons buzzing around hitting each other. These are like your annoying friends or romantic competitions. But after you get them out of the way you still have the positive-positive repulsion of the protons at you core. This I would liken to agreeing with someone’s domestic habits and making sure the sex is really, really good!

And eureka!!! You did it! You fall in love. The sparks fly and it feels amazing as all of that energy is released in a spectacular nuclear explosion. Suddenly the world doesn’t seem so complicated and we have found someone that completes you. This is Fusion and it’s actually much stronger than Fission…. So hahaha, Hollywood was right! Love does conquer all… but maybe not quite. (looking in a book)We may have missed something.

Do you remember the equation e=mc2? Energy actually equals mass. So, if energy is being released during a reaction it’s actually taking away a large part of your mass!

Let me explain. The sum of two Oxygen atoms are larger than the mass of the one sulfur atoms after you have fused. Also, sulfur smell a lot worse than oxygen. What this means is you have actually become diminished in the fusing with another being of low atomic size.

Oh no! Maybe love was a huge waste of energy then.

Now this of course is an abstract though but it does make me think. If this how all of the elements we are made of behave when they fuse, why wouldn’t their total {ourselves} also follow similar reactions?

I know it feels good to fall in love with one person but it seems if you become less in the union maybe it’s not such a good deal. Are you really that scared to be alone?

As we reach closer to stability, that big old valley of stability, we sacrifice much of our binding energy! We become poorer in our structure.

So why do it? Why go through all of the trouble of monogamous love if at the end you are diminished. What seems like kindness removes our independence.

I don’t drive because my wife always does the driving. I don’t cook because my husband takes care of that. I don’t make decisions without asking my partner first.

Would you agree that in a tight monogamous relationship, you at least stop doing some certain things for yourself?

Now, don’t get me wrong think love is beautiful but dependence based on mutual gain is kind of funky like sulfur. Why do we use each other like this when it’s not in our nature to benefit?

If we were made of high elements like Uranium or Potassium, it would make sense to Fuse, it would be hard but we would make brand new elements. As we are just made of simple hydrogen and oxygen, perhaps it’s better to dance with one another instead.

That way we can invite many people to dance and keep our selves. Perhaps we could look at our similarities and invite all 8 billion of us to the party?

Now wouldn’t that be a lovely dance?
